Skin feeling tight, tired or unusually lined? Many assume that means it’s dry. But dryness isn’t always the culprit — and treating it like it is can make things worse.
The problem might not be a lack of oil. It might be a lack of water.
The difference between dry and dehydrated skin
These terms often get used interchangeably. But they’re not the same.
- Dry skin is a skin type. It produces less sebum (oil), often due to genetics. It’s long-term and comes with roughness, flaking and sensitivity.
- Dehydrated skin is a skin condition. It lacks water, not oil. It’s temporary, triggered by stress, diet, weather or overuse of skincare products.
You can have oily skin and still be dehydrated. Or sensitive skin and still be dehydrated. And in those cases, thick moisturisers won’t fix the problem. Because hydration isn’t just about what you put on your skin.
How to tell if your skin is dehydrated
You might notice:
- Tightness without actual dryness
- Skin that looks shiny but feels dull
- Makeup that clings or creases
- Fine lines that suddenly look deeper
- Flare-ups in breakouts or irritation
- A constant feeling of dryness despite drinking water
Sound familiar? You’re not alone.
What causes skin to lose water?
Modern life is rough on your skin barrier. And that barrier is what helps your skin hold on to water.
Common triggers for dehydration include:
- Too much caffeine or alcohol
- Not enough sleep
- Cold weather or strong indoor heating
- Overcleansing or harsh exfoliants
- Chronic stress
- A lack of hydration-supporting nutrients like collagen and omega-3s
Drinking water helps, but it’s not the full solution. If your skin barrier isn’t working properly, the water escapes as quickly as it arrives.
How to rehydrate skin from the inside out
This isn’t about a quick fix or a miracle serum. It’s about helping your skin function better, so it can hydrate and protect itself.
1. Support skin structure with collagen
Hydrated skin starts with strong internal scaffolding. Collagen peptides — especially from marine or liposomal sources — can:
- Improve elasticity
- Strengthen your skin’s moisture barrier
- Reduce water loss through the skin
If your skin can’t hold water, it won’t stay hydrated no matter what you do on the surface.
Collagen Booster Larens Supplement
Dietary supplement containing lyophilized fish collagen with vitamin C from rosehip extract and natural amino acid-mineral complex from fish bones. Daily dose of support for skin, joints, immunity.
2. Use the right topical support
Once you’ve supported the inside, help lock in moisture on the outside. Look for products that combine:
- Peptides (like Biopeptide Complex) to support repair

“This is one of my favorites, I always have this product at hand. Not only is it perfect for daily care, when used regularly, the discolorations I was struggling with simply disappeared. I can’t imagine holidays without a peptide serum, it has a wonderful repairing effect on the skin both during sunbathing and after sunbathing. Basically, everyone in my close circle has this product as a “handy” rescue in emergency cases – burns, cuts, abrasions, etc. To understand it, you have to start using it.”
- Hyaluronic acid to attract and hold water
LipoColl HA Hydro Serum
“Gel texture, super light and super hydrating, and it also reduces small dehydration lines around the eyes, so really 10/10.”
- Gentle natural oils to seal moisture in

Great cleansing gel for problematic skin. It doesn’t dry out the skin while deeply cleansing it. After use, you feel a fresh sensation, and the skin is perfectly prepared for the application of serum and cream. I’ve been using it for five years and I can’t do without it . I would also recommend it to anyone with acne-prone skin as a must-have product!
3. Adjust the habits that dehydrate you
Simple changes can make a visible difference:
- Reduce caffeine and alcohol, even a few days per week
- Eat more omega-3s and healthy fats
- Go easier on exfoliants and actives
- Prioritise mineral-rich water, herbal teas and hydrating foods like cucumber and berries
Hydration isn’t a single step. It’s a system.
Long-term hydration is a long-term fix
You can’t patch over dehydration with one thick cream or a hydrating mask. The fix isn’t about more products but smarter ones. And smarter habits.
When you support your skin barrier and internal hydration, you’re helping your body do what it’s designed to do. That’s what creates glow that lasts.
